BOD/COD Online Analysers
Online BOD and COD monitoring for effluent and sewage treatment with the Chemitec S480 UV sensor and Series 50 analyser.
A BOD/COD analyser gives a continuous organic-load reading in place of a lab test that takes hours or days, by measuring UV absorption at 254 nm (SAC 254) and correlating it to your effluent's COD, BOD or TOC. The Chemitec S480 sensor and Series 50 analyser cover ETP and STP inlet and outlet monitoring.

BOD/COD Online Analysers Guide
How a BOD/COD analyser works
The Chemitec S480 sensor shines UV light at 254 nm through the sample and measures how much is absorbed, a reading called SAC 254 that correlates to COD, BOD or TOC once calibrated against your own lab results. A second LED at 530 nm compensates for turbidity, so suspended solids don't distort the reading. Because it's optical, there's no reagent to dose and no wait for a lab result, just a continuous trend between periodic lab checks.
How to choose a BOD/COD analyser
- Optical path: the S480 comes in 0.3, 1, 2, 5, 10 or 50 mm path lengths; a shorter path suits high-strength effluent and a longer one suits cleaner streams, because it sets the SAC, COD and BOD measuring range.
- Housing material: stainless steel (1.4571/1.4404) as standard, or titanium for aggressive effluent.
- Mounting: a flow cell at 1 bar and 2 to 4 L/min, or direct immersion up to 3 bar.
- Controller: pair the sensor with the Series 50 analyser to log it alongside other parameters, up to 8 simultaneous measurements on one colour display.
- Calibration upkeep: the correlation is application-specific, so budget periodic lab samples as the effluent composition changes; required supervision is under half an hour a month.

FAQ
Common questions
What is a BOD/COD analyzer?
It's an online sensor that reports organic pollution load continuously, instead of a lab test that takes hours for COD or five days for BOD. The Chemitec S480 does this by measuring UV absorption at 254 nm and applying a correlation to your effluent, giving a live COD, BOD or TOC equivalent.
How accurate is UV absorption compared with a lab COD test?
Accuracy depends on how well the correlation is calibrated to your specific effluent, since different organic loads absorb UV differently. The S480 has a repeatability of 0.2% and a 4-second response time, but periodic lab samples are still needed to check and adjust the correlation as the effluent changes.
Does the sensor need chemical reagents?
No. It's a purely optical measurement: an LED shines UV light through the sample and a photodiode measures how much is absorbed. That means no reagent bottles to refill and no waste chemicals to dispose of, unlike a wet-chemistry COD test.
How often does the S480 window need cleaning?
The nano-coated windows and compressed air flushing give long operating periods without manual cleaning, with required supervision under half an hour a month. Exact intervals depend on how much grease or fibre is in your effluent stream.
Can an online analyser replace lab BOD and COD testing?
It replaces routine monitoring and gives early warning of organic load peaks, but it doesn't remove the need for lab testing. Periodic lab samples are still used to check and re-calibrate the correlation, and regulators may still require lab reports for compliance.
Which optical path length should I choose?
Pick a shorter path, such as 0.3 or 1 mm, for high-strength or dark effluent, and a longer path, such as 10 or 50 mm, for cleaner streams where you need to detect small changes. Tell us your expected COD range and we'll confirm the path length.
What's the difference between the S480 sensor and the Series 50 analyser?
The S480 is the UV sensor that takes the measurement in the pipe or tank. The Series 50 is the display and logging unit: it can show up to 8 simultaneous measurements, log 250,000 records and send alarms, so it's used when you want BOD/COD alongside other parameters at one point.
