Thermocouple Calibrator
Check and calibrate temperature instruments with the Calex thermocouple simulator.
A thermocouple calibrator feeds an instrument the exact voltage a thermocouple would produce at a chosen temperature, so you can check whether the display, controller or transmitter reads correctly. The Calex handheld unit combines a data logger and thermocouple simulator, with a universal thermocouple input, ±0.1% or 0.8 °C accuracy and a Modbus interface.

What a thermocouple calibrator is used for
In simulator mode, the unit sends the instrument under test the millivolt signal a real thermocouple would produce at your chosen temperature, so you can confirm the reading on an indicator, controller, PLC input card or transmitter without heating anything. In logger mode, the same unit reads a real thermocouple, for spot checks or short logging runs, since it combines both functions in one handheld device.
How to use it for calibration work
- Accuracy: ±0.1% or 0.8 °C, whichever is greater, at 23 °C ±5 °C ambient, with 0.1° resolution below 1000°.
- Universal input: one universal thermocouple input covers common thermocouple types, so you don't need a separate unit per type.
- Power: a built-in USB-rechargeable battery and backlit colour display suit field use away from mains sockets.
- Connectivity: a Modbus interface lets third-party software read the simulated or logged value directly.
- Typical jobs: checking indicators, controllers, PLC input cards and transmitters during commissioning, maintenance and calibration.
For multi-point surveys rather than single-instrument checks, see the portable temperature datalogger.
FAQ
Common questions
What does a thermocouple calibrator actually do?
It feeds the instrument under test the exact millivolt signal a real thermocouple would produce at a chosen temperature, so you can see whether the display, controller or transmitter reads that value correctly. This checks the instrument's accuracy without needing to physically heat anything to the test temperature.
How accurate is the Calex thermocouple calibrator?
It's rated ±0.1% or 0.8 °C, whichever is greater, at an ambient of 23 °C ±5 °C, with 0.1° resolution below 1000°. That level of accuracy suits checking process indicators, controllers and transmitters during routine commissioning, maintenance and calibration work.
Can the same unit log a real thermocouple as well as simulate one?
Yes, it's a dual-function unit: a thermocouple data logger and simulator in one handheld device with a universal thermocouple input. Use simulator mode to check an instrument's reading against a known value, or logger mode to record a real thermocouple's temperature over time.
What instruments can be checked with a thermocouple calibrator?
Typical targets are indicators, controllers, PLC input cards and transmitters, checked during commissioning, maintenance and calibration rounds. Because the calibrator has a universal thermocouple input and a Modbus interface, it can also feed a value directly into third-party calibration or asset management software.
