Vortex Flow Meters (Höntzsch VA40)

Measure air and gas flow in pipes and ducts with the Höntzsch VA40 vortex probe.

View Products

A vortex flow meter counts the eddies a bluff body sheds into the gas stream, at a frequency proportional to velocity, with no moving parts to wear. The Höntzsch VA40 reads 0.5 to 40 m/s with a wide 1:80 measuring dynamic, giving flow velocity, flow rate and total volume, with ATEX versions for Zone 2 and 22.

Vortex Flow Meters (Höntzsch VA40) Guide

How a vortex flow meter works

A bluff body placed in the flow path sheds a regular pattern of vortices downstream, and the shedding frequency increases in direct proportion to velocity. The VA40's integrated UVA transducer counts that frequency and calculates flow velocity, flow rate and total volume from it. Because there are no moving parts, there's nothing to wear out mechanically, but the shedding pattern does depend on stable, well-developed flow approaching the sensor.

How to choose a vortex flow meter

  • Range needed: the VA40 starts reading from as low as 0.5 m/s and covers up to 40 m/s, a 1:80 measuring dynamic, so one probe often covers both low and peak flow conditions in the same line.
  • Installation: downstream straight run and stable inlet conditions matter for vortex stability, since disturbed flow upstream can affect the shedding pattern the sensor relies on. Confirm your piping layout gives adequate straight run before specifying.
  • Hazardous area: ATEX versions are available for Category 3G and 3D, Zone 2 and 22, but confirm your zone classification against this rating before ordering.
  • Output needed: the configurable transducer gives velocity, flow rate or total volume, so specify which figure your control system or metering application needs.

Typical duties include compressed air and gas consumption metering, biogas and process gas flows, and exhaust or ventilation duct monitoring. For portable spot checks with the same sensor type, see portable gas flow meters.

FAQ

Common questions

What is a vortex flow meter?

It's a flow sensor that counts the eddies, or vortices, shed by a bluff body placed in the gas stream, at a frequency proportional to velocity. The Höntzsch VA40 has no moving parts, reads flow velocity, flow rate and total volume, and covers 0.5 to 40 m/s in one probe.

What is the vortex flow meter working principle?

A bluff body in the flow path sheds vortices downstream in a regular pattern, and the frequency of shedding rises in direct proportion to flow velocity. An integrated transducer counts that frequency electronically and converts it into a velocity, flow rate or volume reading, without any moving parts in the sensing element itself.

What velocity range does the Höntzsch VA40 cover?

It reads from as low as 0.5 m/s up to 40 m/s, a 1:80 measuring dynamic. That wide turndown means the same probe often covers both minimum and peak flow conditions in a compressed air or process gas line, rather than needing separate instruments for each range.

Does a vortex flow meter need straight pipe runs?

Yes. Downstream straight run and stable inlet conditions are critical, because disturbed flow upstream from a bend, valve or fitting can affect the vortex shedding pattern the VA40 relies on. Confirm your piping layout provides adequate straight run before specifying the installation.

Is the Höntzsch VA40 available for hazardous areas?

Yes, ATEX versions are available for Category 3G and 3D, covering Zone 2 and 22. Confirm your site's zone classification against this rating before ordering, since it doesn't extend to the higher-risk Category 1 or 2 zones.

What applications suit a vortex flow meter?

Compressed air and gas consumption metering, biogas and process gas flows, and exhaust or ventilation duct monitoring are typical duties. The lack of moving parts suits long-term stationary monitoring where a mechanical probe would need more frequent maintenance checks.
