Dissolved Oxygen Analyzers
Control aeration in effluent and sewage treatment with Chemitec optical dissolved oxygen sensors.
A dissolved oxygen analyzer measures how much oxygen is available in water, so a wastewater plant runs its aeration blowers only as hard as the biology needs, since blowers are usually the plant's biggest energy user. The Chemitec S423 C OPT optical sensor and Series 30 transmitter cover aeration tank control in ETP and STP without a membrane to replace.

Dissolved Oxygen Analyzers Guide
How a dissolved oxygen analyzer works
The S423 C OPT sensor uses optical luminescence: a light source excites a coating on the sensor tip, and oxygen molecules quench that luminescence in proportion to how much oxygen is present. Because there's no membrane or electrolyte and the sensor doesn't consume oxygen during measurement, the reading is more stable over time and needs far less maintenance than an older galvanic or polarographic sensor, which loses accuracy as its membrane fouls or its electrolyte depletes.
How to choose a dissolved oxygen analyzer
- Sensing principle: choose optical luminescence (S423 C OPT) over galvanic if you want to avoid regular membrane replacement and calibration drift in a biologically active tank.
- Body material: AISI 316 stainless steel for abrasive or high-solids mixed liquor, or PVC for standard aeration basins.
- Control output: pair the sensor with the Series 30 transmitter for a graphic display, alarms and an analogue output that trims blower speed to hold the DO set point.
- Set point: aeration tanks typically target around 1.5 to 2 mg/l, but your process designer should confirm the value for your biology and loading.
- Application beyond ETP: the same sensor suits fish farming, aquaculture and river or surface water monitoring where oxygen levels need tracking.

FAQ
Common questions
Why use an optical dissolved oxygen sensor instead of galvanic?
An optical (luminescence) sensor has no membrane or electrolyte to replace and doesn't consume oxygen while measuring, so its reading stays stable for longer and needs less maintenance than a galvanic sensor, which drifts as its membrane fouls or its electrolyte depletes over time.
How does dissolved oxygen control save energy?
Aeration blowers are usually the biggest energy user in a biological treatment plant. A DO analyzer feeds the blower's speed control, so it runs only hard enough to hold the target oxygen level instead of running continuously at full output, cutting power use without under-aerating the tank.
What DO level does an aeration tank need?
Typically around 1.5 to 2 mg/l for conventional activated sludge, but the right target depends on your loading, biology and process design. Your process designer or consultant should confirm the set point for your specific plant.
Can the S423 C OPT be used outside wastewater treatment?
Yes. The same optical sensing works in fish farming and aquaculture ponds, and in river or surface water monitoring, anywhere a stable, low-maintenance dissolved oxygen reading is needed without a membrane to service regularly.
Does the DO sensor need regular calibration like a galvanic probe?
It needs far less. Because optical luminescence doesn't consume oxygen or rely on a membrane and electrolyte that degrade, the S423 C OPT holds calibration longer than older galvanic sensors, which typically need frequent membrane changes and re-calibration to stay accurate.
What controller works with the dissolved oxygen sensor?
The Chemitec Series 30 transmitter is a single-parameter controller with a graphic display, alarms and an analogue output, built to drive blower speed control directly. It's the standard pairing for the S423 C OPT in an aeration tank.
