HIPERDRIVE HDA 70 Positioning Systems
Automate format changes on packaging and printing machines with the Halstrup-Walcher HIPERDRIVE HDA 70.
The Halstrup-Walcher HIPERDRIVE HDA 70 positioning system repositions a machine axis to a new value on command from the PLC, for heavy spindles, long travel or continuous duty. It runs on a durable EC motor with EtherCAT, PROFINET or EtherNet/IP, rated 15 Nm with 25 Nm self-holding torque. For lighter format changes, see integrated stepper motors.

HIPERDRIVE HDA 70 Positioning Systems Guide
How a HIPERDRIVE positioning system works
An EC (brushless) motor drives the axis directly or through an optional bevel gear, with the drive electronics and the bus interface built into the same unit. The PLC sends a target position over EtherCAT, PROFINET or EtherNet/IP; the drive moves to it and reports status messages, such as position reached or a fault, back over the same bus. That removes the separate cabling a motor, drive and encoder would otherwise need.
How to choose a HIPERDRIVE
- Torque and duty: the HDA 70 is rated 15 Nm continuous, with 25 Nm self-holding torque to keep position when powered down. Use it where a stepper drive would run too hot or lack the holding force, such as heavy print cylinders or long screw spindles.
- Speed: rated speed is 27 min⁻¹, which suits geared or leadscrew axes rather than direct high-speed spindles.
- Mounting: choose axial mounting without the angle gearbox, or radial mounting with the bevel gear, to fit the space around the axis.
- Fieldbus: match the drive's bus option to your PLC network: EtherCAT, PROFINET or EtherNet/IP.
- Duty cycle: for continuous, high-cycle operation such as a rotary print station, the HIPERDRIVE's EC motor runs cooler over a shift than a stepper-based drive.
For lighter, more compact axes such as guide rails and stops on packaging lines, the integrated stepper motors (PSD series) cost less and mount in less space.
FAQ
Common questions
What is the HIPERDRIVE HDA 70 used for?
It is a positioning system for machine axes that need more torque or duty than a compact stepper drive, such as heavy print cylinders, long travel spindles or axes that reposition continuously through a shift. It combines an EC motor, drive electronics and a fieldbus interface in one unit that mounts directly on the axis.
What is the difference between the HIPERDRIVE and integrated stepper motors?
The HIPERDRIVE HDA 70 uses a brushless EC motor rated 15 Nm continuous with 25 Nm holding torque, for heavier or continuous-duty axes. The integrated stepper motors (PSD series) use a compact stepper drive up to about 3 Nm, for lighter, less frequent format changes. Pick by torque and duty cycle, not just by size.
Which fieldbuses does the HDA 70 support?
EtherCAT, PROFINET and EtherNet/IP. The bus interface is built into the drive, so the PLC sends the target position and reads status messages, such as position reached, over the same network cable instead of separate motor, encoder and limit-switch wiring.
Can the HIPERDRIVE mount at a right angle to the axis?
Yes, with the optional bevel gear. The standard axial build mounts the motor in line with the axis; the radial build with the bevel gear lets the drive sit at a right angle, which helps where axial space around the spindle is limited.
