Integrated Stepper Motor Drives
Compact positioning drives with motor, controller and bus interface in one unit, for automatic format changes.
An integrated stepper motor combines the motor, drive electronics and a fieldbus interface in one compact unit that mounts directly on the axis, for automatic format changes on packaging and processing machines. The Halstrup-Walcher PSD series covers NEMA 17 and NEMA 23 frames, with a battery-free absolute position system, so each axis always knows its position.

Integrated Stepper Motor Drives Guide
How an integrated stepper motor works
The PLC sends a new position over the drive's fieldbus interface. The stepper motor, driven directly by the electronics built into the same housing, moves the axis there and holds it. A magnetic absolute measurement system tracks position without a reference run or a buffer battery, so the axis reports its true position the instant power comes back on, rather than needing to home first.
How to choose a PSD drive
- Frame size: the PSD 40/41 use a NEMA 17 frame, suited to lighter guides and stops. The PSD 42/43 use NEMA 23 for higher torque axes.
- Orientation: PSD 40, 42 and 48 mount horizontally; PSD 41, 43 and 49 mount vertically. Match the model to how the axis sits on the machine.
- Compact builds: the PSD 48/49 are ultra-compact at 0.85 kg, for tight format-change stations where every millimetre counts.
- Fieldbus: IO-Link, PROFINET, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, POWERLINK or CANopen, all on a 24 VDC supply.
- Protection: IP50 or IP65 housing options, so pick IP65 for washdown or dusty machine areas.
- Multi-axis setup: where several PSD drives sit on one machine, the PSxHub S manages power and data for up to 10 positioning drives from a single hub.
For heavier spindles, longer travel or continuous duty beyond what a PSD handles, see the HIPERDRIVE positioning system.
FAQ
Common questions
Why is a battery-free absolute measuring system useful on a stepper drive?
It means the drive always knows its exact position after a power cut, a fieldbus reset or an emergency stop, without a reference run to re-home the axis and without a battery to check or replace. On a packaging line, that avoids a scrap product or a wasted cycle every time the machine restarts.
Which fieldbuses do the PSD integrated stepper motors support?
IO-Link, PROFINET, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, POWERLINK and CANopen, on a 24 VDC supply. Pick the interface that matches your PLC network; the mechanical drive and the absolute position system are the same regardless of which bus option you choose.
What is the difference between the PSD 40 and PSD 42?
The PSD 40 uses a lighter NEMA 17 frame for smaller axes. The PSD 42 uses a larger NEMA 23 frame for higher torque. Both are direct-drive, battery-free absolute position units; choose by the torque and load your axis needs, not by footprint alone.
How many positioning drives can one PSxHub S manage?
Up to 10 positioning systems from a single active hub, which manages power and data over PROFINET or EtherCAT. It reduces the wiring and setup time on machines with several format-change axes, compared with cabling each PSD drive back to the PLC individually.
Can an integrated stepper motor work outdoors or in a washdown area?
Choose the IP65 housing option rather than the standard IP50, which suits dusty or occasional washdown areas around a machine. The rated ambient range is 0 to 40 °C, with storage from -10 to 70 °C, so check the drive won't sit outside that range in an unheated area.
