Point Level Switches for Solids & Liquids
Point level switches for silos, hoppers and tanks: vibrating fork, paddle, capacitance and more.
A point level switch trips at one set level, high to prevent overfilling or low to protect a pump, rather than giving a continuous reading. This page compares vibrating fork, vibrating rod, rotating paddle, admittance, capacitance, conductivity and magnetic float switches from Trumen and Seli, so you can match the technology to your solid or liquid.

How a point level switch works
Each technology detects material differently, but all give a single on/off contact at the mounted level. Vibrating fork and rod switches sense the damping of an oscillating probe, rotating paddle switches sense the torque needed to keep a paddle turning, admittance and capacitance switches sense a change in capacitance as material covers the probe, conductivity switches sense current flow through a conductive liquid, and magnetic float switches sense a float's position directly.
How to choose a point level switch
- Free-flowing powders: a vibrating fork or rod switch, for particles up to 10 mm, working up to 250 °C, with PTFE, PFA or ECTFE coatings for corrosive media.
- General bulk solids: a rotating paddle switch, a lower-cost option with fins sized for different bulk densities.
- Sticky solids or liquids: an admittance switch, which ignores probe build-up, rated up to 600 °C with ceramic insulation.
- Non-sticky liquids and solids: a capacitance switch, usable for single-point, multi-point or pump control from one probe.
- Conductive liquids: a conductivity switch (Trumen LWS, or Seli SKS-15, SKS-25, KS-17), including IP69K versions for CIP/SIP cleaning.
- Liquids up to 10,000 cP: a vibrating fork switch, which also detects flow / no-flow in pipes.
- Hygienic duty: the Seli SGS-02 capacitive switch, 316L, CIP/SIP cleanable up to 150 °C.
All Trumen switches offer field-selectable minimum or maximum fail-safe. For a continuous reading instead of a switch point, see level transmitters for solids and liquids.
FAQ
Common questions
Which point level switch suits powders?
A vibrating fork or rod switch for free-flowing powders and granules up to 10 mm particle size, a rotating paddle switch for general bulk solids at lower cost, or an admittance switch if the material is sticky and would otherwise build up on a probe.
What is fail-safe mode on a point level switch?
It sets whether the switch output goes to its alarm state on high level or low level, so that a power failure or sensor fault is always treated as an alarm rather than silently ignored. All Trumen switches on this page offer field-selectable minimum or maximum fail-safe.
Which point level switches are suitable for hygienic applications?
The Seli SGS-02 capacitive switch, in 316L stainless steel and CIP/SIP cleanable up to 150 °C, and the Seli SKS and KS conductive detectors, rated IP69K for CIP/SIP cleaning. Both suit dairy, food and pharma tanks where standard switches would fail hygiene requirements.
What is the difference between admittance and capacitance level switches?
Both sense a change in electrical capacitance as material covers the probe, but an admittance switch's circuit is designed to ignore a coating or build-up left on the probe by sticky material, while a standard capacitance switch can false-trip on heavy build-up. Choose admittance for sticky solids or liquids, and capacitance for cleaner, non-sticky material.
Can a vibrating fork switch detect flow as well as level?
Yes. Besides a point level in a vessel, the vibrating fork switch can detect flow or no-flow of liquid in a pipe, useful as a dry-run or pump-protection interlock. It handles liquids up to 10,000 cP and temperatures up to 250 °C.
Which switch works with conductive liquids like water?
A conductivity switch: the Trumen LWS or the Seli SKS-15, SKS-25 and KS-17 detectors, which sense current flow between an electrode and the vessel wall through the liquid. They only work on liquids conductive enough to carry that current, so they aren't suitable for oils or deionised water.
