Level Transmitters for Solids & Liquids
Continuous level measurement for silos and tanks: radar, guided wave radar, ultrasonic and capacitance.
A level transmitter gives a continuous reading of how full a silo or tank is, so you can monitor stock, control filling and plan deliveries, instead of only a high or low switch point. This page covers Trumen radar, guided wave radar, ultrasonic and TLC2 capacitance transmitters, and the Seli SFP, across liquids, powders and slurries.

How a level transmitter works
Each technology measures level differently, from a microwave or sound pulse timed against its reflection to a change in electrical capacitance as material covers a probe. Radar and guided wave radar are unaffected by dust or vapour, ultrasonic works well over open liquids but struggles with heavy dust or vapour, and capacitance suits sticky or conductive materials. All give a continuous reading rather than a single trip point.
How to choose a level transmitter
- Dusty silos: choose radar or guided wave radar. Radar works from vacuum to 160 bar and -40 to +400 °C, unaffected by vapour and dust; guided wave radar suits tighter vessels and obstacles, up to 30 m with ±3 mm accuracy and -40 to +250 °C.
- Liquids and open tanks: the TLUC ultrasonic transmitter is a cost-effective choice for liquids, solids and slurries, and can also monitor open-channel flow, with 4 to 20 mA, RS485 Modbus and relay outputs.
- Sticky or hot liquids: the TLC2 two-wire capacitance transmitter uses a PTFE or ceramic-insulated probe, up to 300 °C and 20 bar, for liquids such as edible oil.
- Hygienic liquids: the Seli SFP is a TDR sensor with an elastomer-free G1" weld-in connection, 4 to 20 mA or 0 to 10 V output, for -1 to 16 bar.
- Interfaces and low dielectric liquids: guided wave radar handles these better than free-space radar.
For water tanks and wells, see the hydrostatic level transmitter. For a switch point instead of a continuous value, see point level switches.
FAQ
Common questions
Which level transmitter works best in a dusty silo?
Radar or guided wave radar, because the microwave pulse isn't affected by dust the way an ultrasonic pulse is. The Trumen radar transmitter works from vacuum to 160 bar and -40 to +400 °C, unaffected by vapour and dust, so it stays accurate in cement, grain and powder silos where ultrasonic can lose its echo.
What is the difference between radar and guided wave radar?
Free-space radar sends a microwave pulse through open air above the material and reads the reflection. Guided wave radar sends the same pulse down a probe in contact with the material, which works better in tighter vessels, around obstacles, and on low-dielectric liquids or interfaces. Trumen's guided wave radar reaches 30 m with ±3 mm accuracy.
Can a level transmitter measure open channel flow?
Yes. The Trumen TLUC ultrasonic transmitter can monitor open-channel flow over weirs and flumes as well as tank level, with 4 to 20 mA, RS485 Modbus and relay outputs. That makes it useful for combined level and flow monitoring in water treatment plants.
Which transmitter suits sticky or hot liquids like edible oil?
The Trumen TLC2 two-wire capacitance transmitter, with a PTFE or ceramic-insulated probe rated to 300 °C and 20 bar. Capacitance sensing works well on sticky, non-conductive liquids that could foul an ultrasonic or radar sensor's reference point.
What accuracy does guided wave radar offer?
The Trumen guided wave radar transmitter measures up to 30 m range with ±3 mm accuracy, and covers -40 to +250 °C. That's tight enough for most inventory and custody-quality level readings in tanks and silos.
Is there a hygienic level transmitter for liquids on this page?
Yes, the Seli SFP is a TDR fill-level sensor with an elastomer-free G1" hygienic weld-in connection, rated -1 to 16 bar, with 4 to 20 mA or 0 to 10 V and switching outputs. For a fully flush-mounted hygienic option, see our milk silo level transmitters.
