Ramp & Soak Profile Controllers
Run ramp and soak temperature profiles in furnaces and ovens with Shinko programmable controllers.
A ramp and soak profile controller runs a temperature program automatically: ramp up at a set rate, hold (soak) for a set time, then cool in a controlled way, the same way every cycle. The Shinko PCA1 stores 16 patterns of 16 steps each; the PCB1 stores 10 patterns of 10 steps, for heat treatment, curing, kilns and test chambers.

Ramp & Soak Profile Controllers Guide
How a ramp and soak profile controller works
A single set-point controller only holds one temperature. Heat treatment, curing and kiln processes instead need a sequence: heat up at a controlled rate, hold at temperature for a set time, then cool in a controlled way, sometimes repeated across several stages. A profile controller stores that sequence as a pattern of steps and runs it automatically, so the process repeats identically every batch instead of depending on an operator watching a clock.
How to choose a profile controller
- Program capacity: the PCA1 stores 16 patterns of 16 steps each, with monitoring software and enhanced serial communication for tracking programs from a PC. The PCB1 stores 10 patterns of 10 steps, with a large display and quick setup, powered over a USB tool cable.
- Display: the PCA1 uses an 11-segment LCD for clearer readouts of the running step and set points.
- Power: both accept 100 to 240 VAC or 24 VAC/DC supply, so either fits most panel supplies without a separate transformer.
- Protection: both have IP66 (drip-proof and dust-proof) fronts, which suits kiln rooms and curing areas where dust or moisture is common.
- Outputs: both provide control and event outputs, so the profile can also switch an external device, such as a damper or a fan, at a chosen step.
For a single fixed set point rather than a multi-step program, see process PID controllers.
FAQ
Common questions
What is the difference between a pattern and a step on a profile controller?
A pattern is a complete temperature program, and a step is one segment within it, such as a ramp, a soak or a cooling stage. The PCA1 stores 16 patterns of 16 steps each; the PCB1 stores 10 patterns of 10 steps. Build the pattern once and it runs the same way on every batch.
Which profile controller stores more programs?
The Shinko PCA1, with 16 patterns of 16 steps each, against the PCB1's 10 patterns of 10 steps. If you run many different heat-treatment or curing recipes, the PCA1's larger capacity avoids reprogramming between jobs; for simpler, fewer recipes the PCB1 is enough.
Can I monitor a ramp and soak program from a PC?
Yes, with the PCA1, which includes monitoring software and enhanced serial communication for tracking the running step, set points and status from a computer. The PCB1 focuses on quick local setup instead, with configuration powered over a USB tool cable rather than a permanent PC link.
What applications use ramp and soak profile controllers?
Heat treatment and annealing furnaces, ceramic and glass kilns, and curing ovens or environmental test chambers, anywhere a process needs to follow a set heating, holding and cooling sequence rather than sit at one fixed temperature. Both the PCA1 and PCB1 are drip-proof and dust-proof (IP66) for these often dusty or humid areas.
How is a profile controller powered and set up on site?
Both the PCA1 and PCB1 accept 100 to 240 VAC or 24 VAC/DC, so either fits most existing panel supplies. The PCB1 is set up quickly over a USB tool cable, which also powers it during configuration, while the PCA1 adds enhanced serial communication for ongoing PC monitoring once it's running.
