Refractometers for Pulp & Paper

Retractable KxS refractometers for black liquor and kraft recovery in pulp mills.

View Products

Black liquor dry solids control the efficiency and safety of a kraft recovery boiler: too low, and unburned water in the furnace is a serious hazard. The KxS DCM-20 PASVE® is a retractable refractometer that measures dry solids continuously through evaporation and recovery boiler firing.

Refractometers for Pulp & Paper Guide

Why black liquor dry solids are measured continuously

In kraft pulp mills, black liquor is concentrated in evaporators before being burned in the recovery boiler. Dry solids that are too low make the boiler inefficient and put unburned water into the furnace, a serious safety risk. An inline refractometer reads dry solids continuously, so the evaporator train can be held within limits without waiting for lab samples.

How the DCM-20 PASVE® is built for pulp mills

  • Retraction: an industry-standard PASVE® valve, with a custom isolation valve made for KxS, lets you retract the sensor for inspection without stopping the process.
  • Safety: quadruple or triple safety locking prevents the sensor being withdrawn against process pressure.
  • Line size: it scales to process lines of 2" and larger.
  • Typical duty: black liquor evaporator control, recovery boiler firing liquor, and green and white liquor concentration.

For other process industries using the same DCM-20 platform, see inline process refractometers.

FAQ

Common questions

Why measure black liquor dry solids continuously?

Dry solids affect recovery boiler efficiency and safety. If solids run too low, unburned water reaching the furnace is a serious hazard. Continuous measurement with the DCM-20 PASVE® keeps the liquor within safe operating limits through the evaporator train.

Can the sensor be removed while the process is running?

Yes. The PASVE® retractable design, with its isolation valve and quadruple or triple safety locking, lets you withdraw the DCM-20 PASVE® for inspection without stopping the process or draining the line.

What line sizes does the pulp and paper refractometer fit?

The DCM-20 PASVE® scales to process lines of 2" and larger, which covers most black liquor evaporator and recovery boiler feed lines in a kraft mill.

Is the black liquor refractometer retractable or fixed?

It's retractable. The PASVE® valve design lets you pull the sensor into an isolation chamber for inspection or cleaning, then return it to the process, rather than mounting it as a fixed, non-removable fitting.
