Inline Process Refractometers by Industry
KxS inline refractometers for real-time concentration measurement across industries.
An inline process refractometer measures the concentration of dissolved solids, such as Brix or percent solids, directly in the pipe, from the refractive index of the liquid. KxS DCM-20 and DCM-10 models cover food and beverage, sugar, chemical, pulp and paper, semiconductor and bioprocessing, in standard and ATEX versions.

Choosing an inline process refractometer by industry
Pick the industry page that matches your process.
- Food and beverage: the food & beverage refractometer is 3-A and EHEDG certified for Brix, interface detection and blending control in juices, dairy and drinks.
- Sugar refining: the sugar refractometer gives real-time Brix from raw juice through evaporation to crystallisation.
- Chemical and industrial: the chemical industry refractometer measures acid, caustic, polymer and blending concentrations with industrial process connections.
- Pulp and paper: the pulp & paper refractometer uses a retractable PASVE® design for black liquor dry solids in kraft recovery.
- Semiconductor fabs: the semiconductor refractometer monitors wet chemical concentration in cleaning, etching and stripping baths.
- Bioprocessing: the bioprocessing refractometer has an Ingold or sanitary connection for fermentation, feed and purification steps.
DCM-20 or DCM-10?
- DCM-20: the main model, a single-piece 316L flow cell with no weld joints, scaling from 1" to 4" lines, CIP-compatible and pressure rated to 55 bar, in sanitary, Ingold or industrial process connections. It reads the refractive index optically, so it isn't affected by bubbles, colour or flow, unlike a U-tube density meter, and it mounts in any pipe orientation.
- DCM-20 PASVE®: adds a retractable design with an isolation valve for pulp mills, so the sensor can be withdrawn for inspection without stopping the process.
- DCM-10: a smaller, dedicated concentration monitor built specifically for semiconductor wet chemicals.

FAQ
Common questions
What does an inline process refractometer measure?
The refractive index of the liquid, which relates directly to the concentration of dissolved solids, such as Brix, percent dry solids or percent chemical strength. It reads continuously in the pipe, without sampling or lab analysis.
Inline refractometer or density meter?
A refractometer is compact, mounts in any pipe orientation and isn't affected by flow, colour or bubbles, unlike a U-tube density meter. It's usually preferred where installation space is limited or the process has entrained gas.
Which industries use a KxS inline refractometer?
Food and beverage, sugar refining, chemical and industrial processes, pulp and paper, semiconductor fabs and bioprocessing. Each industry page covers the connections, hygiene standards and typical applications for that process.
Is an ATEX version of the inline refractometer available?
Yes. The DCM-20 and DCM-20 PASVE® are available in ATEX versions for hazardous areas, across the same industries as the standard range. Confirm your zone and we'll match the right ATEX model.
What pipe sizes does the DCM-20 fit?
The single-piece 316L flow cell scales from 1" to 4" lines, with the exact connection size depending on the industry page and whether it's new pipework or a replacement fitting. Tell us your line size and connection type and we'll confirm the right DCM-20 configuration.
Can the refractometer be cleaned in place?
Yes. The DCM-20 flow cell is CIP-compatible and EHEDG certified, with no weld joints to trap product, so it cleans in place alongside the rest of a hygienic process line.
