Refractometers for Food & Beverage

Real-time Brix and concentration measurement for food and beverage production with KxS inline refractometers.

View Products

A brix meter for food and beverage reads Brix and dissolved solids directly in the pipe, in real time, so you can control blending, catch product changes and cut waste. The KxS DCM-20 meets 3-A design standards, is EHEDG certified and is pressure rated to 55 bar.

Refractometers for Food & Beverage Guide

What a brix meter is used for in food and beverage

In food and beverage plants, Brix and dissolved solids decide product quality and yield. A brix meter measures them continuously in the pipe instead of by periodic lab sample, so blending, filling and evaporation can be controlled or corrected as they happen, not after the batch is already off spec.

How to choose a brix meter for food and beverage

  • Hygiene: the DCM-20 meets 3-A design standards and is EHEDG certified, with a single-piece 316L flow cell that has no weld joints, for 1" to 4" lines.
  • Cleaning and pressure: it's CIP-compatible and pressure rated to 55 bar.
  • Connection size: 1.5" connections suit new pipework, 2.5" suit replacing existing fittings.
  • Typical duty: beverage interface detection between product and rinse water, dairy evaporator and spray dryer feed control, whey filtration, and juice, beer, wine or milk blending and quality control.

For sugar refining rather than general food and beverage lines, see refractometers for sugar.

FAQ

Common questions

How does a brix meter reduce product waste on a filling line?

It detects the interface between product and rinse water sharply, by reading dissolved solids directly, so the line switches from rinse water back to product at exactly the right moment instead of running extra rinse or losing product.

Is the DCM-20 certified for hygienic food use?

Yes. It meets 3-A design standards and is EHEDG certified, with a single-piece 316L flow cell that has no weld joints to trap product, so it cleans in place alongside the rest of a hygienic line.

Brix meter or conductivity sensor for interface detection?

A brix meter measures the product's dissolved solids directly, giving a sharper, more reliable interface reading than conductivity or turbidity, which respond to ions or particles rather than the concentration itself.

What line sizes does the DCM-20 fit?

The single-piece 316L flow cell scales from 1" to 4" lines. Connections are 1.5" for new pipework or 2.5" when replacing an existing fitting. Tell us your line size and we'll confirm the connection.

Can a brix meter be used on dairy evaporators?

Yes. It gives continuous concentrate feed control on evaporators and spray dryers, which keeps powder moisture consistent instead of relying on periodic lab checks of the concentrate.
