Inline Refractometers for Sugar
Real-time Brix measurement for sugar refining, from juice to syrup and massecuite.
A brix meter for sugar gives continuous Brix readings from raw juice through evaporation, syrup and crystallisation, so operators can hold each stage at its target instead of waiting for lab samples. The KxS DCM-20 needs no conversion tables or flow limits and is unaffected by colour or bubbles.

Inline Refractometers for Sugar Guide
Why an online brix meter is used in sugar refining
Sugar production is controlled by Brix at every stage: raw juice, evaporation, syrup, pan boiling and crystallisation. An online brix meter gives continuous readings at each of these points, so operators can hold each step at its target instead of waiting for lab samples to come back.
How the DCM-20 is built for sugar processing
- Reading: real-time Brix, with no conversion tables or flow limitations.
- Reliability: a refractometer reads the dissolved solids in the liquid, so colour, bubbles and undissolved crystals in the flow have little effect, which matters through boiling and crystallisation.
- Hygiene and cleaning: a single-piece 316L flow cell that's CIP-compatible.
- Mounting: mounts in vertical or horizontal pipes without affecting the reading.
- Typical duty: juice and evaporator Brix, syrup and liquor concentration, vacuum pan and crystallisation control, and molasses and refined sugar liquor.

FAQ
Common questions
Why use a brix meter instead of a density meter for sugar?
The refractive index relates directly to dissolved solids, without conversion tables or flow limits, and the sensor mounts in any pipe orientation. A density meter, by contrast, typically needs a U-tube and is more sensitive to flow and bubbles.
Can a brix meter be used during sugar crystallisation?
Yes. The DCM-20 is designed for sugar, syrup and crystallisation process control, and because a refractometer reads the liquid phase, crystals and bubbles in the massecuite flow have little effect on the reading.
Where are brix meters installed in a sugar plant?
Typically on juice and evaporator outlet lines, and on syrup and vacuum pan feed lines, so Brix is tracked from raw juice through evaporation to crystallisation.
Does an online brix meter need lab calibration checks?
The DCM-20 reads Brix directly from refractive index, with no conversion tables, but periodic lab checks are still good practice to confirm the reading against a reference sample for your specific liquor.
Is the sugar refractometer available for hazardous areas?
Yes, see our ATEX inline process refractometers for sugar applications that need Ex-rated equipment, such as areas near raw sugar dust. Confirm the zone with us before ordering so we can match the right ATEX model.
