ATEX Membrane Level Switch
Point level detection for powders in silos, hoppers and bins in ATEX dust zones with the Filsa CD ATEX membrane switch.
An ATEX membrane level switch detects medium or minimum level of powders in silos, hoppers and bins in hybrid atmospheres, where flammable gas or solvent vapour and combustible dust are both present. The Filsa CD ATEX has no moving parts inside the vessel and is certified for dust, gas and hybrid mixtures, for dusty, powdery, granulated and grainy bulk goods.

ATEX Membrane Level Switch Guide
How an ATEX membrane level switch works
A flexible membrane sits in the vessel wall. As material builds up and presses against it, the membrane flexes and actuates a switch mounted outside the vessel, so nothing inside the tank can jam or wear from moving parts. Because the sensing element is passive, the same design copes with dusty, powdery, granulated or grainy bulk goods without adjustment.
How to choose an ATEX membrane level switch
- Atmosphere type: the CD ATEX is certified for dust, gas and hybrid mixtures, so it's the right choice where solvent vapour or flammable gas is present alongside combustible dust.
- Material: it's rated for bulk densities of 0.3 to 2.5 t/m³, covering pharma and chemical powders, grain, flour and sugar, and coal or biomass.
- Mounting level: fit it at medium or minimum level in the silo or vessel wall, at the point you want the alarm.
- Dust-only alternative: where there's no gas or vapour hazard, the reinforced-membrane ATEX boot level switch suits dense or abrasive dust-only duty instead.
For full or empty indication rather than a fixed point, see ATEX pendulum level switch.
FAQ
Common questions
What is a hybrid mixture in ATEX terms?
It's an atmosphere that contains both combustible dust and flammable gas or vapour at the same time, for example a solvent-wet powder in a pharmaceutical or chemical process. Equipment installed there needs certification for both hazards together, not just one, which is what the Filsa CD ATEX provides.
What level does the CD ATEX normally control?
Medium or minimum level of bulk solids in silos and vessels, triggered when material builds up against the membrane. It suits dusty, powdery, granulated and grainy goods including pharma and chemical powders, grain, flour, sugar, coal and biomass.
Is a non-ATEX version of the CD membrane switch available?
Yes, the standard CD membrane level switch uses the same design for non-classified areas. Choose the ATEX CD ATEX version whenever the installation point sits in a zone classified for dust, gas or hybrid atmospheres.
How is the ATEX membrane switch different from the boot level switch?
The membrane switch (CD ATEX) is certified for dust, gas and hybrid mixtures. The boot level switch (AD ATEX) has a reinforced membrane for dense or abrasive materials but carries a dust-only rating. Choose the boot switch for tougher dust-only duty, and the membrane switch where gas or vapour is also present.
