ATEX Solid Flow Monitor for Powders
Monitor flow and no-flow of powders in pneumatic conveying lines in hazardous dust zones with the Auburn PM-1.
An ATEX solid flow monitoring device detects flow and no-flow of powders in pneumatic conveying lines running through hazardous dust zones, where a blocked line or an empty feeder can stop a burner or a process. The Auburn PM-1 for hazardous areas gives a continuous flow / no-flow signal using DynaCHARGE™ charge-induction sensing, indicating relative flow rather than weight.

How ATEX solid flow monitoring works
A probe mounted in the conveying line uses DynaCHARGE™ charge-induction sensing to detect the electrical charge carried by moving powder particles. When material stops moving, the signal drops and the alarm tells your operators or PLC straight away, rather than the blockage only being noticed once it affects downstream equipment. The signal tracks relative flow, so a falling but non-zero reading can also warn of a line starting to choke before it blocks completely.
Specifying the right unit
- Application: pulverised coal feed to kiln and boiler burners, pneumatic conveying of sugar, flour and starch, and discharge monitoring under silos and feeders in dust zones.
- Zone classification: share the zone at the sensor location so we can confirm the certified version.
- Signal use: set both a low-flow alarm and a no-flow alarm, since the falling signal ahead of a full blockage is often the more useful early warning.
- What it doesn't do: it indicates flow and relative flow, not weight in kg/h; for mass measurement you need a separate weighing device.
For a bag filter leak alarm rather than a conveying line, see ATEX broken bag detector. For non-hazardous areas, see Solid Flow Monitor for Powders.
FAQ
Common questions
Why use an ATEX flow monitor instead of a standard one on a conveying line?
If the conveying line runs through a classified dust zone, every instrument installed there, including the flow monitor, must be certified for that zone. The ATEX PM-1 gives the same flow monitoring as the standard model, with the certification needed for hazardous-area installation.
Can it warn me before a conveying line blocks completely?
Yes. It shows relative flow rather than just an on/off signal, so a falling reading can warn of a line starting to choke before it blocks. Set a low-flow alarm alongside the no-flow alarm to catch that earlier stage.
Does the ATEX solid flow monitor measure kg/h?
No. It's a flow / no-flow and relative flow indicator, not a weighing device, so it won't give a mass throughput figure. For kg/h measurement on a conveying line, you'd need a separate weighing or metering instrument alongside it.
Which applications typically use this device?
Pulverised coal feed to kiln and boiler burners, pneumatic conveying of sugar, flour and starch, and discharge monitoring under silos and feeders, wherever the line runs through a zone classified for combustible dust.
