ATEX Broken Bag Leak Detector
Continuous leak monitoring for dust collectors and baghouses in ATEX zones, so a torn bag is found before it becomes an emission or a hazard.
An ATEX broken bag leak detector monitors the clean-air side of a dust collector continuously and raises an alarm when a filter bag starts to leak, before dust builds up downstream. In classified dust zones, the detector itself must be certified for the zone. The Auburn PM-1 on this page uses DynaCHARGE™ charge-induction sensing for these areas.

ATEX Broken Bag Leak Detector Guide
How ATEX bag leak detection works
DynaCHARGE™ charge-induction sensing measures the electrical charge carried by dust particles passing a probe in the clean-air duct. A rise in that signal means dust is getting through the filter media, which is the first sign of a torn, worn or loose bag. Because the sensor doesn't need airflow through it to work, it reads continuously rather than taking periodic samples, so an operator or PLC gets an early warning instead of finding out from a stack or emission reading days later.
Choosing between the two detector pages
- For a specific leak alarm on a bag filter or baghouse, see the ATEX broken bag detector, based on the Auburn PM-1, available as the PM 1-A for essential alarms or the PM 1-T for proactive leak detection.
- For monitoring flow or no-flow of powder in a pneumatic conveying line rather than a filter, see the ATEX solid flow monitoring device, using the same sensor applied to a different point in the process.
- Both need the zone classification (for example Zone 21 or Zone 22) at the sensor location, the duct size, the gas temperature and the dust type, so we can confirm certification and version.
- The standard, non-ATEX version uses the same DynaCHARGE™ sensing; see Bag Filter Leak Detection if your area isn't classified.
A leaking bag in a plant handling combustible dust is more than an emission problem: dust escaping to the clean side builds up in ducts and fans, adding to the fire and explosion risk downstream.
FAQ
Common questions
Why do I need an ATEX-rated bag leak detector instead of a standard one?
If the filter handles combustible dust and the installation area is classified as an explosive dust zone, every electrical instrument there, including the leak detector, must be certified for that zone. A standard detector can't legally or safely be installed there.
How does the detector know a bag has torn?
It uses DynaCHARGE™ charge-induction sensing in the clean-air duct, which measures the electrical charge carried by dust particles. A rising signal means more dust is passing through the filter media than normal, which signals a torn, worn or loose bag before it becomes visible or triggers an emission limit.
Which zone ratings does the ATEX PM-1 cover?
Tell us the zone classification of your installation point, for example Zone 21 or Zone 22, and we'll confirm the certification of the PM-1 version supplied for it. Certification depends on both the zone and the dust type present.
What's the difference between the leak detector and the solid flow monitoring device?
The leak detector watches the clean-air side of a filter for dust getting through a torn bag. The solid flow monitoring device watches a conveying line for the powder itself, confirming flow or no-flow. Both use the same Auburn PM-1 sensor, applied to different points in the process.
Does the ATEX version detect leaks the same way as the standard model?
Yes. It uses the same DynaCHARGE™ sensing to detect rising dust levels after the filter. The only difference is the certification carried for installation in a classified hazardous area.
