Broken Bag Detector: PM-1 & PM-1Pro
Auburn PM-1 and PM-1Pro broken bag detectors for bag filters and dust collectors.
A broken bag detector is a dust sensor fitted after a bag filter that alarms the moment a bag starts leaking. The Auburn PM-1 gives a low-cost alarm as the PM 1-A or leak trending as the PM 1-T, while the PM-1Pro adds continuous measurement and Modbus connectivity for emissions reporting. See broken bag leak detection for the technology.

Broken Bag Detector: PM-1 & PM-1Pro Guide
How a broken bag detector works
Both models use Auburn's DynaCHARGE™ charge-induction sensing: dust particles passing the probe induce a small electrical charge, which the electronics convert into a signal proportional to the dust passing. There's no direct contact with the particles and no light source, so the sensor works well even on damp or sticky dust. A rising signal means more dust is getting through, whether from a torn bag or a failed seal.
Choosing between the PM-1 and PM-1Pro
- Output needed: the PM 1-A gives two SPST alarm relays rated 5 A at 250 VAC or 30 VDC. The PM 1-T adds a 4 to 20 mA output and two configurable relays for proactive leak notification. The PM-1Pro adds a loop-powered 4 to 20 mA option plus HART and Bluetooth.
- Sensitivity: the PM-1 detects from 0.1 mg/m³, the same minimum resolution as the PM-1Pro, but the PM-1Pro is built for continuous, low-level trending rather than alarm-only duty.
- Temperature: the PM-1 handles process gas up to 500 °F (260 °C). The PM-1Pro handles up to 1650 °F (898 °C) and adds an optional remote electronics module for safe access when the duct runs hot.
- Hazardous area rating: the PM-1 carries a Class II Division II rating and the PM-1Pro a Class I Division I rating. These are North American ratings, not ATEX approvals.
- Emissions reporting: choose the PM-1Pro when you need EPA MACT or NESHAP self-testing per ASTM D7392, or a logged record for your environment team. The PM-1 is built for alarms, not reporting.
- Enclosure: both are rated NEMA 4X / IP66, with detachable or removable electronics for maintenance without disturbing the probe.

FAQ
Common questions
What is the difference between the PM-1 and the PM-1Pro?
The PM-1 is a cost-effective leak alarm, available as the PM 1-A for relay alarms or the PM 1-T for 4 to 20 mA trending. The PM-1Pro adds continuous low-level measurement from 0.1 mg/m³, a graphic display, Bluetooth, USB and Modbus, and is built to meet emissions standards such as EPA MACT and NESHAP as well as detect leaks.
Will it work with my type of bag filter?
It measures the dust in the outlet duct rather than the bags themselves, so it suits most bag filter and cartridge collector designs. What matters is duct size, gas temperature and dust type. Tell us those details and we'll confirm the right model.
What hazardous area rating do these detectors carry?
The PM-1 carries a Class II Division II rating and the PM-1Pro a Class I Division I rating. Both are North American hazardous-location ratings, not ATEX approvals. For plants that need ATEX, we supply ATEX versions: see our ATEX broken bag detector page and tell us the zone.
Can the sensor handle damp or sticky dust?
Yes. DynaCHARGE™ charge-induction sensing doesn't rely on direct probe contact or optical clarity, so it copes with damp, sticky and hazardous dust that would foul an optical sensor. Both the PM-1 and PM-1Pro offer insulated or isolated probe options for particularly difficult material.
What should I send you for a quote on a broken bag detector?
The number of filters or compartments to monitor, duct size, gas temperature and the dust type, plus your choice of alarm-only output or continuous trending and emissions reporting. We'll use that to recommend the PM-1 or PM-1Pro and confirm the probe option.
