Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Sensors
Measure indoor air quality (CO2, VOC and humidity) for healthier, more efficient buildings.
An indoor air quality sensor measures how clean and comfortable the air inside a building is, usually through CO2, VOC, humidity and temperature, so poor conditions can be corrected before they cause tiredness, headaches or complaints. IAQ readings are also increasingly part of green building ratings and workplace wellbeing programmes.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Sensors Guide
What indoor air quality sensors measure
- CO2: a marker of how well a space is ventilated for the number of people in it. Levels rise as a room fills and fall as it empties.
- VOC (volatile organic compounds): gases from people, cleaning products, furniture and building materials, which can build up even when a room is quiet.
- Humidity and temperature: comfort, and the risk of mould, static or condensation at the extremes.
How IAQ sensors are used
Readings go to the BMS, which increases ventilation when the air gets worse and saves energy when it's good, matching fresh air supply to actual conditions rather than a fixed schedule regardless of occupancy or activity. A touchscreen transmitter can also show the readings directly to the people in the room, which helps with wellbeing programmes and green building certification, where visible monitoring is often part of the scoring criteria.
Where to mount an IAQ sensor
- Room: mount it in the occupied zone, typically on an inside wall at around 1.5 m, away from windows, doors and supply air outlets, so it reads the air people are actually breathing rather than a draught or direct sunlight.
- Duct: mount it in the extract air for an average reading of the zone rather than a single point, which suits open-plan areas served by one air handling unit.
Choosing a sensor
- Measurement: decide if you need CO2, VOC, or both.
- Display: decide if a display matters for occupant visibility.
- Products: see Indoor Air Quality Transmitters or, for the specific pollutant angle, VOC and Air Quality Sensors for HVAC.
FAQ
Common questions
What is a good indoor air quality sensor for offices?
A room transmitter measuring CO2 or VOC together with temperature and humidity covers most offices. The Produal RTX-CO2-D-RH-VOC combines all of these on one touchscreen device, which suits meeting rooms and open-plan areas where occupants benefit from seeing the reading.
What is the difference between CO2 and VOC sensors?
CO2 shows how much fresh air there is for the number of people in a space, since people breathe it out. VOC sensors respond to a wider mix of gases from materials, cleaning products and activities, so they can flag poor air quality even when the room is empty. Many buildings use both.
Where should an indoor air quality sensor be mounted?
In the occupied zone, typically on an inside wall at around 1.5 m, away from windows, doors and supply air outlets, so it reads representative air rather than a draught. Alternatively, mount it in the extract duct for one average reading of the whole zone.
How does indoor air quality affect a green building rating?
Rating schemes increasingly score how well a building monitors and controls IAQ, using continuous CO2, VOC, humidity and temperature readings as evidence rather than a one-off test. Fitting IAQ sensors and logging their data can support the points a project needs.
Can one sensor measure CO2, VOC and humidity together?
Yes. A combined room transmitter such as the Produal RTX-CO2-D-RH-VOC measures all three plus temperature from one device, which is simpler to install and commission than fitting separate sensors for each reading in the same room.
