pH Analysers for Pools and Cooling Water
pH monitoring for swimming pools, cooling towers and building water treatment.
A pH analyzer for pools and cooling water keeps acidity in the range where chlorine disinfects effectively and scale or corrosion stays under control, dosing acid or alkali to hold it there. The Chemitec S401 VG electrode and Series 30 analyser cover pool and spa pH control, cooling tower treatment and boiler feed water.

pH Analysers for Pools and Cooling Water Guide
What a pH analyser is used for
pH affects how well a pool disinfects, whether cooling tower water scales or corrodes, and how treatment chemicals perform generally. The S401 VG electrode generates a small voltage that varies with hydrogen ion concentration, and the Series 30 analyser converts that into a 0 to 14 pH reading, with outputs to control an acid or alkali dosing pump automatically.
How to choose a pH analyser
- Water conductivity: the S401 VG works in low-conductivity samples down to 5 µS/cm, which matters for RO or demineralised water where some electrodes struggle to give a stable reading.
- Diaphragm type: a single-pore diaphragm suits general water applications and gives steady contact between the reference electrolyte and the sample.
- Operating limits: the electrode handles up to 80 °C and 6 bar, with a PG13.5 thread for standard fitting installation.
- Display and control: the Series 30 gives a 128 x 128 graphic display with alarms and outputs for acid or alkali dosing, so it both shows the reading and corrects it.
- Target range: pool and spa pH typically runs 7.2 to 7.6, where chlorine works well and swimmers are comfortable; cooling tower and boiler targets depend on the treatment programme.

FAQ
Common questions
What pH should a swimming pool have?
Typically about 7.2 to 7.6, the range where free chlorine works well as a disinfectant and swimmers find the water comfortable. The Series 30 analyser can hold the pool in this range automatically by controlling an acid or alkali dosing pump from the S401 VG electrode's reading.
Can the pH analyser control dosing automatically?
Yes. The Series 30 has outputs to control an acid or alkali dosing pump directly from the measured pH, correcting drift without an operator testing and dosing manually. It also raises an alarm if the reading moves outside the set range.
Does the pH electrode work in soft or RO water?
Yes. The S401 VG works in low-conductivity samples down to 5 µS/cm, which covers RO and demineralised water where some pH electrodes give an unstable or slow reading. It's a common requirement in buildings with RO plant alongside cooling towers.
Why does cooling tower water need pH control alongside conductivity?
Conductivity-based blowdown controls dissolved solids, but pH separately governs whether the water tends to scale or corrode the system. Both are usually measured together, and a dual-parameter analyser can handle conductivity and pH from one unit where a site wants both.
What temperature and pressure can the pH electrode handle?
The S401 VG is rated up to 80 °C and 6 bar, which covers pool water, cooling tower loops and most building water treatment points. It fits via a PG13.5 thread, so check your installation's connection before ordering.
