Turbidity Analysers for Water Treatment
Turbidity monitoring for drinking water, swimming pools and building water treatment.
A turbidity analyzer for water treatment measures how clear water is, confirming that pool filters and drinking water treatment are working and giving early warning of a problem in storage. Chemitec S461-LT and S461-TN sensors, with the Series 30 analyser, cover swimming pools, drinking water tanks and rainwater or grey water reuse.

Turbidity Analysers for Water Treatment Guide
What turbidity measures and why it matters
Turbidity is a measure of how much suspended matter scatters light passing through water, expressed in NTU. The S461-LT sensor shines light through the sample and measures the scattered light at 90°: the more particles present, the more light scatters, and the higher the NTU reading. A rising trend signals a filter losing performance or a storage tank picking up sediment or contamination, before it becomes visible.
How to choose a turbidity analyser for water treatment
- Water clarity: the S461-LT covers 0 to 10 or 0 to 100 NTU with 0.01 NTU resolution, suited to clear water such as pool and drinking water; the S461-TN covers up to 4000 NTU, suited to dirtier water in treatment plant or reuse systems.
- Application: swimming pool filter performance, drinking water tanks and treatment, and rainwater or grey water reuse are the typical uses.
- Target level: drinking water standards typically set a low limit, around 1 NTU, so check the standard that applies to your site.
- Display and alarms: the Series 30 analyser displays turbidity, raises an alarm above a set point, and sends the value to the BMS, so a filter fault is caught before it affects water quality downstream.
For food and industrial process turbidity, see turbidity sensors 0 to 4000 NTU.
FAQ
Common questions
What turbidity is acceptable in drinking water?
Drinking water standards set low limits, typically around 1 NTU, though the exact figure depends on the standard that applies to your site and water source. The S461-LT sensor's 0.01 NTU resolution is fine enough to track water well within that limit and catch a rising trend early.
Which turbidity sensor suits a swimming pool?
The S461-LT low turbidity sensor, which covers 0 to 10 or 0 to 100 NTU, the clear-water range typical of a well-filtered pool. For dirtier water, such as raw water before treatment, the S461-TN sensor covers up to 4000 NTU instead.
Can the turbidity analyser alarm when a filter fails?
Yes. The Series 30 analyser raises an alarm once turbidity rises above the set point, so a failing or bypassed filter shows up as an alert rather than only becoming visible once the water looks cloudy.
What does turbidity actually measure?
It measures how much suspended matter, such as silt, algae or biological growth, scatters light passing through the water, reported in NTU. It's not a direct measure of any specific contaminant, but a rising reading is a reliable early sign that filtration or treatment needs attention.
Can turbidity readings go to the BMS?
Yes. The Series 30 analyser sends the turbidity value to the BMS alongside its local display and alarm, so facility teams see filter and water treatment performance on the same screen as tank levels and other building water points.
