Pneumatic Retractable Sensor Housings
Pneumatic housings for automatic sensor retraction, cleaning and calibration.
A pneumatic retractable housing automates sensor care: on a schedule or on command, it withdraws a pH, conductivity or optical sensor into its chamber, rinses, cleans and calibrates it, then returns it to the process. Exner's EXtract 810 to 830 cover stainless steel and plastic construction up to 16 bar and 140 °C, run by an EXmatic control unit.

Pneumatic Retractable Sensor Housings Guide
How a pneumatic retractable housing works
A pneumatic actuator, driven by an EXmatic control unit, withdraws the sensor from the process into an isolated chamber on a timed schedule or on command. There the chamber rinses, cleans and calibrates the sensor before returning it to the process, all without an operator present. That keeps accuracy consistent on continuous or unattended lines where manual service isn't practical.
How to choose a pneumatic retractable housing
- Standard duty: the EXtract 810 and 811 are stainless steel or Alloy C22, up to 16 bar and 140 °C, with the 811 extending to 207 mm immersion.
- Weld-in socket: the EXtract 815 fits a DN25 weld-in socket, with a PTFE scraper for the retraction stroke.
- Plastic, lower pressure: the EXtract 820 and 821 are PP, PVDF or PEEK, up to 10 bar and 140 °C.
- Dirty media: the EXtract 825 combines a DN25 weld-in socket with an integrated PTFE scraper.
- Hygienic process: the EXtract 830 has EHEDG / 3-A approved stainless steel connections, up to 16 bar.
- Control: pair any model with an EXmatic control unit to run the cleaning and calibration cycle automatically.
For occasional service you'd rather do by hand, see manual retractable housings. For hazardous areas, see the ATEX retractable sensor holder.
FAQ
Common questions
How does a pneumatic retractable housing work?
An EXmatic control unit drives a pneumatic actuator that withdraws the sensor into an isolated chamber, rinses and cleans it, runs a calibration, and returns it to the process. It runs on a schedule or on command, with no operator present, which keeps readings accurate on continuous lines.
Why choose pneumatic over manual retraction?
Pneumatic retraction automates cleaning and calibration on a fixed schedule, so accuracy doesn't depend on an operator remembering to service the sensor. It suits continuous or unattended processes where manual retraction would mean frequent site visits.
What controls the pneumatic retractable housing?
An Exner EXmatic control unit. It drives the retraction cycle and runs the rinse, clean and calibration sequence, so the housing operates automatically once the schedule or trigger conditions are set.
Can a pneumatic retractable housing be used in a hazardous area?
Yes, the EXtract pneumatic housings are usable in ATEX areas. For a fully ATEX-rated retractable holder including the drive, see our ATEX retractable sensor holder page and confirm the zone with us before ordering.
Which pneumatic housing suits hygienic food processing?
The EXtract 830, with EHEDG / 3-A approved stainless steel connections rated up to 16 bar, is built for cleanable mounting in food and beverage lines that need automated, unattended sensor service.
What sensor length does a pneumatic retractable housing take?
The EXtract pneumatic range accepts 12 mm sensors from 225 mm to 325 mm long, longer than the manual EXtract range, to suit the housing's longer retraction stroke and chamber.
