View Products

ATEX and flameproof instruments are measurement and control devices certified for use where flammable gas or combustible dust can form an explosive atmosphere. This page covers our full range for gas zones 0, 1, 2 and dust zones 20, 21, 22: level switches, pressure and flow transmitters, vibration sensors and refractometers from Beck, Trumen, Hauber-Elektronik, Höntzsch, Filsa, Calex and KXS.

ATEX and Flameproof Instruments Guide

How ATEX and flameproof certification works

ATEX is the European scheme that classifies hazardous areas into zones and sets the equipment category needed for each: gas zones 0, 1 and 2 run from continuous to occasional risk, and dust zones 20, 21 and 22 follow the same pattern. Flameproof (Ex d) is one protection method, containing an internal explosion inside the enclosure so it can't reach the atmosphere outside, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) is another, limiting the energy in the circuit so it can't ignite anything even under a fault. Each certified instrument carries a marking that states its category, protection method, gas or dust group and temperature class.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the difference between ATEX and flameproof?

ATEX is the European certification scheme for equipment used in explosive atmospheres, covering both gas and dust hazards. Flameproof, marked Ex d, is one protection method within that scheme: the enclosure is built to withstand and contain an internal explosion so it can't reach the atmosphere outside. Other methods, such as intrinsic safety (Ex i), limit energy instead of containing it.

What are ATEX zones 0, 1 and 2?

They describe how often an explosive gas atmosphere is present. Zone 0 means it's present continuously or for long periods, Zone 1 means it's likely during normal operation, and Zone 2 means it's unlikely and would only last briefly if it occurred. Dust zones 20, 21 and 22 follow the same pattern for combustible dust.

How do I know which certified instrument I need?

Tell us the zone classification at the mounting point (gas 0, 1, 2 or dust 20, 21, 22), the gas group or dust type, and the required temperature class. With those details we can confirm an instrument with the right marking for your area from our ATEX and flameproof range.

Can ATEX and flameproof instruments also be used in safe areas?

Yes. A certified instrument works the same way in a non-hazardous area as its standard equivalent, so it can be used there without restriction. Buyers sometimes specify certified instruments across a whole plant to standardise on one model, even where only part of the site is classified.

Do you supply instruments for both gas and dust hazards?

Yes. Many of our ATEX and flameproof instruments, such as the Filsa CD membrane level switch and the Trumen flameproof level range, carry markings for both gas and dust zones. Others are rated for one hazard type only, so check the marking against your area classification before ordering.

Which brands make up this range?

Beck pressure and differential pressure switches, Trumen flameproof level and pressure instruments, Hauber-Elektronik vibration sensors, Höntzsch flow probes and handheld meters, Filsa membrane and pendulum level switches, Calex infrared temperature sensors, Auburn dust detectors and KXS refractometers.
